Opstal, Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2018
Grape: Chenin Blanc 100% Abv: 13.5%
Opstal’s rich history dates back to 1847 when JC Rossouw acquired the farm De Opstal bij de Fonteine. Just over a century later in 1950, 4th generation Carl Everson decided to continue making his own wine instead of joining the local co-operative winery like many other producers. The estate is now in its 7th Generation, with Attie Louw making fantastic wine across its three labels. The Chenin Blanc's discreet nose gently opens up to notes lemon curd, quince and pineapple with additional flavours of peach and yellow plums on its core. Its fresh acidity is nicely folded into its sumptuous flesh. The perfect amount of oak complements this superbly made wine perfectly and we just find it hard to put the glass down when we’re tasting it. A sublime example of this often under-appreciated grape variety. Drinks like a good Burgundy.
