The Westland Colere 3rd Edition is a limited-release American Single Malt whiskey created to highlight the unique flavor contribution of a single, specific heirloom barley varietal known as "Pilot". It is celebrated for its bright, complex, and grain-forward profile that artfully balances fruit, spice, and subtle oak notes.
Key Details- Barley Varietal: This edition exclusively uses "Pilot" barley, a 2-row spring variety tracing its lineage to UK grain breeders, grown in the Skagit Valley of Washington State.
- Aging: The whiskey was aged for a minimum of 41 months in a combination of refill Westland barrels (93%) and a second-fill Oloroso Sherry hogshead (7%). The use of refill casks was intentional to minimize wood influence and emphasize the grain's character.
- ABV: Bottled at a robust 50% ABV (100 proof).
- Limited Release: There were only 4,629 bottles produced in June 2023.
- Nose: The aroma is described as bright and inviting, with notes of lemon peel, ripe melon, chamomile or herbal tea, toasted nuts (almonds/pistachios), and a confectionary sweetness reminiscent of cookies or macaroons.
- Palate: The palate is rich and balanced, featuring flavors of apple, orange, pear, banana, and coconut. Reviewers also found notes of almond cookies, toasted sesame oil, baking spices (ginger, black pepper), and a pleasant sweetness balanced by warmth.
- Finish: The finish is smooth, mid-length, and complex, lingering with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, melon, orange blossom, and a light, pleasing herbal or a faint smoke character.
